It all started in The Chief Tormentor’s garage back in 1974
and we’re celebrating in a BIG Stave way!
Our Chief Tormentor, Steve Richardson (right) and his devious cohort, Dave Tibbetts (left), met while working at a small computer outfit in Hanover, NH. Little did they know that losing their jobs a short 6-months later would become a launchpad to success. The two founded their own company, Strategy House, and began designing board games and cardboard puzzles. When they placed an ad in a Boston newspaper, it was answered by a gentleman with a request to create a wooden jigsaw puzzle for his wife. Steve eagerly accepted the challenge! Countless months of research, a few boxes of band-aids, and many sleepless nights followed. Finally, Stave Puzzles was born! In 1974, Steve and Dave combined their names to form Stave (which means to break to pieces). A small ad in the New Yorker magazine resulted in long-term customers and new puzzling friendships.

We are notorious for fun and games. In the early years, we sprinkled word and picture puzzles throughout our catalogs and mailings teasing the reader to take the bait.
