Take a look at this amazing irregular edge. This scene started as a rectangle with jungle foliage behind all the birds. Our crafter, seeing that there was too much foliage, decided to create the ellipse behind the flamingos to better show off the birds , make the puzzle more interesting, and make it bigger without all the extra pieces. Imagine doing this puzzle, without a picture, and wondering what’s going on. Yes, that’s our job….. to puzzle and perplex you!
In early March, CBS News Sunday Morning correspondent Rita Braver, producer Judith Hole and crew spent two days at the Stave shop taping for a show scheduled to run April Fool’s Day! Since their visit they have been interviewing several of our customers, collecting Stave memorabilia, and putting all the pieces together.
The show will air Sunday, April 1st. at 9:00 a.m. EDT on CBS. (check your local listings)
Be sure to tune in!
Thursday and Friday this week were very hectic what with the TV crew of ‘CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood’ decending on us full force. This is all very exciting and our segment will air Sunday morning April 1st. But get this…. the CBS producer of this segment, Judy Hole, was here 20 years ago filming Staveland for Jane Bryant Quinn show. Judy remembered I had created an April’s Fool puzzle, Five Easy Pieces, which was a total fiasco. No one got my joke that the puzzle was actually impossible and I had to swallow my pride and give all 30 customers their money back. Most worked on the puzzle, just 5 pieces, for days thinking that there was a solution. They then told me that I was free to torment them any way I wanted so long as the puzzle had a solution…. so I learned my lesson.
The top photos shows cameraman Mike and soundman John filming Elizabeth cutting a puzzle… yes, I do permit this once we cover up some things. The next 2 photos show puzzle tester Marcia assembling a prototype puzzle to give us feedback on how to improve it. We never go to final art until a new puzzle design has been thoroughly tested…. for obvious reasons.
The puzzle party was a 3-day event in mid-February. The party organizers were Carol Pierson and hubby Hank Conklin plus Jennifer and Rick Lennox. Carol was Stave’s markeing director and Jennifer is our VP in charge of puzzle crafting. Carol/Hank live in Maine. Jennifer/Rick live near Norwich.
Friday, Feb 16th, everyone made their way to BBF hrough thick and thin. Most of the party participants stayed in BBF’s Guest House where there is a large living room perfect for puzzling. Friday night lots of puzzles were spread around the living room for everyone to work on before and after their gourmet meal. The BBF dining room is nationally recognized for its gourmet meals.
Saturday the fun and games began with all sorts of light-hearted competitions held regularly during the day including a NASCAR-like event involving the famous BBF golf carts. Teams fo 3 raced all about the magnificent property to search for clues and puzzle pieces. The main weekend prizes included a two-night stay at BBF and a 250-piece Stave puzzle. All participants received a small Stave commerative puzzle.
Fun was had by all. Check out the the below photos taken and prepared by Hank:
